3 wacky tourist attractions in New Zealand

Last Friday husband and I took a drive from Queenstown to Wanaka.  Wanaka is a beautifully scenic town set on Lake Wanaka and one of the most popular attractions is That Wanaka Tree, a lone willow which grows in the lake.  Husband wasn't best impressed though.  After we'd gotten lost trying to find it, when he eventually saw it he said 'is that it?' and started photographing a beautiful autumnal tree nearby.

It made me think of a couple of other wacky tourist attractions in New Zealand.  In Wellington, on Cuba Street there is a bucket fountain. Since 1969 this bright kinetic structure has taken pride of place among pedestrians.

But my favourite wacky attraction is the Lemon and Paeroa bottle.  L&P is a lemon flavoured soft drink and a seven-metre bottle stands tall in Paeroa.  An obligatory photo with the bottle is a must!

Top 3 Things to do in Rarotonga, Cook Islands

We recently spent 5 glorious days in Rarotonga, it was truly paradise.  On arrival at the airport we received beautiful eis of fragrant magnolias.   Me with my Ei Here are my top 3 island musts. 1.  Attend an Island Night show We went to the show at the Crown Beach Hotel in Arorangi which featured the Akirata Dance Troupe.  Cook Islanders are known for their singing and dancing and the hour long show does not disappoint. 2.  Try a Raro Buggy Tour There are several ways to explore the island.  Cars and scooters are reasonable to hire, and there is also a bus service which runs either clockwise or anti-clockwise around the island.  But this tour was the best!  Hop into a buggy for an experience like no other! 3. Muri Night Markets The Muri Night Markets are open from 5-8pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.  The Cook Islands are beautiful islands, but being islands most things need to be imported....

Conscious Living

This month I am focussing on how I can live more consciously.  Living consciously means actively evaluating our decisions and options, and thus creating a life that we  want.  I would like to be more conscious of how my decisions affect others.  I believe that making small changes every day can have a bigger impact. So to start with, I am looking at what I consume.  Everyone knows that I love chai Friday .  If I'm honest when I asked my hubby to buy me a KeepCup for  Christmas it was because I liked the cute cup, I wasn't actually considering the environment at all.  In my research for this post I've found out that  because of the polyethylene plastic lining in paper cups, they can't be recycled in New Zealand.  Which means that for someone having 5 coffees a week, 14kg of waste  will end up in landfill each year!   March Resolution #1 - Carry my KeepCup with me every day!
