Hibiscus Coast New Zealand

Last weekend we drove north across the Harbour Bridge to visit Orewa.  Orewa is a stretch of beach 3km long and is perfect for a day trip or weekend break.  Our journey there felt epic as an accident on the motorway brought traffic to a halt but coming back was a breeze.  Orewa is only 20 minutes north of the Harbour Bridge (on a good day!)

In true Autumn style the weather was completely unpredictable.  We parked at the beach, it started to rain.  We went home to have a nap, the sun came out!!  Still we managed to get some beach time and some rays!

The highlights of the weekend were:

A visit to the Estuary Arts Centre
When entering Orewa along the Hibiscus Coast Highway the Gallery is on the left.  The Te Ara Tahuna Estuary is close by and popular with cyclists and there is skate park behind the Gallery.

The beautiful beach
The calm water is perfect for kayaking or paddle boarding.  Admittedly I didn't go anywhere near the water, (it looked like it was freezing) but we did walk along the lovely stretch of beach.

The food
There is a strip of cafes and restaurants further along the Hibiscus Coast Highway in the town centre.  We had dinner at Coast which offered a great selection and even better service.  The pork belly is to die for.

Orewa is definitely worth a visit, and it isn't too crowded in the Autumn.

What a lovely idea for a weekend break at the seaside. The fact that it is so close to Auckland is ideal.
