Top 3 Things to do in Rarotonga, Cook Islands

We recently spent 5 glorious days in Rarotonga, it was truly paradise.  On arrival at the airport we received beautiful eis of fragrant magnolias.

 Here are my top 3 island musts.

1.  Attend an Island Night show
We went to the show at the Crown Beach Hotel in Arorangi which featured the Akirata Dance Troupe.  Cook Islanders are known for their singing and dancing and the hour long show does not disappoint.



2.  Try a Raro Buggy Tour
There are several ways to explore the island.  Cars and scooters are reasonable to hire, and there is also a bus service which runs either clockwise or anti-clockwise around the island.  But this tour was the best!  Hop into a buggy for an experience like no other!


3. Muri Night Markets
The Muri Night Markets are open from 5-8pm every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday.  The Cook Islands are beautiful islands, but being islands most things need to be imported.  While food can be brought in from New Zealand, groceries are available at the island supermarkets (Wigmore's, CITC) but will be slightly more expensive.  There are no fast food chains on Rarotonga (we had wondered why the group in front of us at Immigration had KFC specially pre-packed) and restaurants can be pricy.  The Night Markets offer a true taste of island food at reasonable prices for enormous portions.  There is a great atmostphere with music playing in the background and the aroma of BBQ in the air.

Wellington's Best Breakfasts

Wellington is a wonderful city and has the best cafes to start your day the right way.  Here are 3 of the best! 1.  The Hangar The Hangar is the flagship café of Flight Coffee, who produce amazing coffee while always aiming to have the best impact they can on the industry.  Located in an airy space on Willis Street, come for the coffee but definitely stay for breakfast.  The granola was simply amazing! Granola from the Hangar 2. Nikau Cafe Tucked away in Civic Square this cafe is not the easiest to find, but is worth getting lost for!  Open from 7am on weekdays (8am on the weekends), you have the option to build your own breakfast starting with eggs and adding on anything from bacon to kimchi!  Delicious with a lovely vibe. 3.  Seize Seize is all about clean eating, and who could have known that waffles could be so healthy?  With lots of vegan options, including delicious brownies, Seize really is a treat.
